Absolutely! They let us do that with our 3 iPhones in the family now. So whatever 1 person buys, the next time the other two sync's up, they get those apps <em>without doing a thing</em> (kind of annoying sometimes with the teenager and his stupid shooter games). When I first saw the iPad demonstrated, I immediately thought of it as a replacement for the Kindle. Heck, it's only about $150 more expensive than the Kindle was! At only 1/2" thick, the iPad can certainly balance on the treamill's magazine ledge. I too am excited for its release. Not sure if I get your point about the apps, though... you think Apple will let you "transfer" them to a new device without paying for them again?
